Group Training Australia WA Inc (GTA WA) has welcomed this week’s announcement by the Training and Workforce Development Minister Liza Harvey that the State Government will create more opportunities for trainees and apprentices in the WA building and construction industry.

GTA WA Chairman Stuart Diepeveen said that the new Government Building Training Policy will benefit the training, employment and skill sector within the building and construction industry.

“It is welcoming to see that the policy will apply to State Government projects with a labour value of more than $2 million needing to meet this requirement, including maintenance contracts.

“The benchmark of 11.5 per cent of the company’s trade workforce consisting of trainees and apprentices is a clear sign that the government is serious about training, employment and skill development in the State”

“Once industry is able to demonstrate this level of engagement, GTA WA would like to see it increase ensuring that the next generation of people is engaged and skilled up to meet market demand.”

“The policy will assist in creating a culture within the building and construction industry of continuous engagement with trainees and apprentices”.

Mr Diepeveen said that Group Training Organisations (GTO’s) in WA who are members of GTA WA can assist companies in employing and training trainees and apprentices in all industries, including building and construction.

The Group Training model allows GTOs to employ and train trainees and apprentices leaving the host employer to concentrate on the practical on-the-job component of training and skill development.  Many GTO’s also provide the flexibility of being able to move trainees and apprentices from one host employer to another to allow the employer to cope with changing quantities of work while ensuring continuous employment for the trainees and apprentices. It’s a model that’s been around since the eighties and it works.

Group Training Australia WA Inc is the State’s peak body representing member Group Training Organisations in WA who employ majority of apprentices and trainees who are in group training in Western Australia.
