Skills reforms will help streamline the training system and place the focus on quality and jobs

Group Training Australia (GTA), the largest network employing apprentices and trainees, said today that further reforms announced by the federal government would help to produce a more streamlined and effective vocational education and training (VET) system.

The Chief Executive Officer of GTA, Jim Barron, welcomed the announcement by Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane outlining changes to improve the quality of training and to inject a stronger industry focus.

“We are pleased that the government has moved to address red tape and duplication with the creation of a new Australian Apprenticeship Support Network, with a focus on measures to better link training with work.

“The focus on quality outcomes and improved apprentice completions has the potential to significantly lift the quality of training and better align it to jobs that will be needed by industry,” Mr Barron said.

“Raising the stature of apprenticeships is vital if we are to attract the right people and give them the best opportunity to learn, train and succeed in the skilled jobs of the future.

The proposed reforms to ASQA and the quality framework are sensible and overdue. They will support high quality training providers to have the agility and flexibility to develop training that meets the needs of dynamic industries.

GTA welcomes the Minister’s commitment that poor quality training providers and brokers will be identified and dealt with.

GTA also welcomes the Minister’s announcement that the government will soon issue a discussion paper looking at reform of the current training package process and the way industry is involved and consulted.

Group Training Australia is the national peak body representing the network of over 150 Group Training Organisations (GTOs) employing apprentices and trainees throughout Australia.
